- STUNNING...if it works, and we have no reason to believe it doesn't!
- DEST has just released their PC Scan Plus. This is LIKE an Abaton scanner
- for any PC, including the MacPlus. However, it does one major thing differently:
- it will allow you to feed it a sheet of paper containing text
- and graphics; it will accept the text as TEXT, capable of being placed
- directly into MacWrite, MS Word, et al. Think of it! A press release
- normally has to be typed in to be printed in a newsletter. Now it can
- be fed through the PC Scan Plus. In any event, we've arranged for a demo
- unit as soon as the local distributor has one available, and we're
- working on some special user group pricing for y'all - this one ain't
- cheap; its retail price is $2495 for the scanner, $695 for the software
- on the MacPlus, and $195 for the MacPlus interface. Get ready for some
- better pricing ASAP.

-
- We talked to one of the owners of Kamerman Labs (see 1/87 MacWorld, p. 9)
- about the new Cirrus SCSI drives for the Mac. The drives, 20MB and 40MB
- as well as a 40MB tape backup, have their good points and bad points,
- all freely admitted to by our source. Size and noise are good points; at 3x6x9",
- each of the drives are nice and compact. As for noise, the 20MB
- drives use either Rodime, Miniscribes, or Fujitsu units. The Miniscribes
- are the noisiest of the three. You could conceivably request which unit
- you want. The 40MB drive is deadly quiet, and you'll never even know it's turned
- on. SCSI addresses are difficult to get to, requiring that you
- open the case, but Kamerman will build to order to make things easier
- on that count. Kamerman Labs seems easy to reach, with an 800 number,
- and everyone we spoke to there was friendly and helpful. Further, they
- offered some special user group pricing to us.
-
- Although the pricing is only fair on the hard drives, we think the price
- is excellent on the tape back up...Here are the prices (realize these are early,
- and may not be the final prices...we're not sure yet as to release dates, but h
- ave a demo forthcoming):
-
- 20MB HD: $699
- 40MB HD: $1499
- 40MB Tape Backup: $999
